6 Things That Will Be Cheaper in 2013

1.  Streaming
Redbox jumped on board!  Their streaming service is only $8/month and you get 4 DVD 1-night rentals with that.  This is only in beta right now, but you can sign up here.  I have no idea what Netflix and other competitors who charge more are going to do in response, but my best guess (with my fingers crossed) would be to lower their prices.  Yay for competition!

2.  Electric Cars
Maybe this is the year it will finally become more affordable to go green.  Don't get too excited.  The lowest projected price for this summer is $25,000 on a new Chevy Spark EV, but that's still a lot cheaper than the market's been.  The reason prices are starting to fall?  The demand hasn't been as high as anticipated and new competition is starting to crop up.

3.  Oil
Oil prices dropped suddenly in September, and they're only supposed to get lower.  I'm not sure how that will turn out; predicting the market, especially with a commodity surrounding by so much political instability, doesn't always work out the way we think it's going to.  But if it does indeed start dropping again, that will supposedly mean that lower gas prices will get passed on to consumers.  I don't believe that for a second.  So here's Femme Frugality's prediction:  if oil prices drop, we will not see a drastic drop in prices at the pump.  If we demand one, we will see a rise in taxes to compensate for the lower price of oil that will somehow get siphoned off through a subsidy to help oil execs make even more money.

4.  Travel Booked Mobile-ly
It's easier than ever to book travel, today.  And there's about a bajillion apps for that.  Two areas of travel that are expected to see price cuts because of the competition factor in mobile booking are last minute bookings and bookings that bundle the flight, hotel and car rental all together.  When you're thinking last minute deals, think weekend getaways and places close to home as that is what will likely be marketed towards you.  When you think of bundle destinations, think of beachy places like the Carribean or anywhere else where the hotel will be able to persuade you to spend more money on fun outings and tons of alcohol.

5.  Wii U
There's going to be tons of electronics that go down in price.  But I'm a Nintendo girl so this one particularly excites me.  Nintendo originally priced their Wii U console for their fanboys; they knew they'd be buying it regardless of the price.  But they also know that the pricing model isn't sustainable.  Look for a price cut between summer and the holiday season of 2013.

6.  Solar Panels
While I'm not sure Pittsburgh is the best place to harness solar energy, panels are falling in price.  It makes it tempting to try it out.  After all, if you're a home owner you'd get a deduction on your taxes and even if it's only a fraction of your energy bill, after the initial investment who wouldn't want to be self-sufficient and pay the electric company a little less each month?  We're seeing the prices drop because manufacturers have made far too many, and the birth of subsidized solar manufacturing has forced many of them out of business. Whatever's left of their inventory is going really cheap driving the market value down.  It's actually kind of sad.  But as a consumer you can take advantage.

  1. I had not heard Redbox was doing that. That said, it makes complete sense that they'd need to in order to stay competitive with Netflix. I've never used Redbox, but once they launch this nationally I'd be more than willing to try.

    1. Hopefully it goes well in beta. Netflix charges so much more if you want both services. And their streaming options can kind of suck sometimes.

  2. I really want to buy solar panels for my house! I am waiting for prices to drop dramatically but I am also waiting to decide if this is our forever house. I think we may downsize in the future so things are kind've up in the air.

    1. Supposedly they're on their way down until 2017...maybe housing arrangements will be more permanent by then!

  4. That's a good reason to not be early adapters to new technology. Video games consoles tend to drop in price every year, especially when an updated or better version comes out on the market :D Better to get one after they've been out in the market for awhile because you'll spend less, AND have more games to choose from. Hope you're right about gas prices :)

    1. Absolutely! The original Wii took a WHILE to drop, though.

  5. I get so excited by news of new technology AND tech prices coming down. My fav on your list? Easily that would be solar panels. I love what I've read about the new roll-up panels that cost next to nothing.

Now if they could find a way to make doughnuts that taste great AND are fat free.....I'd probably pass out.

  8. My favorites are numbers 1 and 6. The only kind of TV I ever watch nowadays are DVDs since I don't have cable.

I would LOVE to install solar panels at our place;)

    1. We have Netflix...but maybe our rates will go down or we'll switch to Redbox if the beta is successful. We ditched the cable, too. Too much $$$.

I bet the solar panels would be absolutely perfect where you live!

  9. I'd love to get an evironmentally friendly car but I can't do the price tag. And solar panels will be installed when I buy a home. Hope those prices keep dropping.

    1. Me, too. They're going down, so that's a start. I'm with you, though...I'm going to have to wait till they go down even lower. Solar panels are supposed to keep going down until 2017, so we have a few years of price drops hopefully!

  10. Not a homeowner yet, but I really want to try and go green when I am- so I will continue to keep an eye on the solar panel world.

That's awesome about Redbox, I hadn't heard that yet!

    1. Portland seems like it's the kind of city that would have some really great tax breaks for you if you did, too.

I'm super excited about Redbox, as well!

  11. That's great about Solar energy, but also travel booking via mobile. I've only used my mobile to book a couple times -- and if price cuts, well I just may use it more! :)

  14. I've been eyeing up solar panels as well. Not sure how useful they'll be in rainy Vancouver, but depending on the price, might be worth it one day!

  15. Hadn't heard of red box streaming, so thanks

  16. Nice to hear that these things will be affordable this year. Fuel prices should really stay low. These are among the necessities in our daily lives.

  17. Every time oil prices drop my local pump justifies not bringing down the price because "it is old oil and we paid more for it", then prices go up and "we have to keep up with the market". Consumers will never win!

  18. You know, I think they will resort to lowering the price of electric cars in the future. After all, what’s the use of designing it to be helpful to the environment if the majority of the people wouldn’t be able to afford it at all, right? And like you’ve mentioned, the competition is what would really propel this prediction.

  19. Electric cars are growing more popular these days, so it’s no wonder that car manufacturers are doing their best order for customers to patronize this new technology. There are some who are uncertain in buying e-cars, but when prices are lower, they’ll be convinced to try it for sure!
